Lapis Lazuli is a blue stone of psychic development and initiation. The Latin meaning of Lapis Lazuli is Sky Stone or Blue Stone. Lapis Lazuli is a sodium aluminum silicate with a hardness of 5.5. This crystal’s specimens will generally consist of Lazurite, Calcite, Pyrite, and Quartz. Lapis has been mined since the Neolithic age in Afghanistan. It was used as a seal of royalty and decoration for ancient Egyptian Pharaoh tombs.

Lapis has also been revered as a source of the pigment Ultramarine. Both Ancient Egyptians and Renaissance European artists utilized Ultramarine as an exotic blue dye. As there was no abundant source of Lapis Lazuli within Renaissance Europe, the price for Lapis and thus Ultramarine was as expensive as Gold. If you feel a resonance with the color blue, or want to improve your throat chakra capabilities, then Lapis Lazuli is the stone for you.
